NOM Tour Tracker: Brian Brown’s spin on Tour, DOMA, and Argentina

(Updated to include previously missing grafs on Argentina)

By Eden James

Another day, another epic email message from Brian Brown and the National Organization for Marriage.

As usual, he’s spinning away on current events, from NOM’s “Summer for Marriage: One Man, One Woman” tour to the DOMA case to the news out of Argentina last night.

It’s all bad news for NOM, of course, but that isn’t stopping Brian from trying to buck up his troops. Check out his take on the first tour stop in Maine yesterday:

“Together with my wife and six kids, we set off in the NOMmobile to let folks know that marriage is on the move! This kind of national series of rallies has never happened before on the marriage issue. This is history in the making. This is something really new–and exciting! NOM’s Summer for Marriage bus tour will help us alert new supporters, build our activist list, and counteract the mainstream media news blackout–all to help us build the army of supporters we need to win this fight!”

Of course, what Brown fails to acknowledge is that Equality Maine was able to generate a higher turnout in Augusta yesterday than NOM did after weeks of NOM hyping the event to their followers. As we reported yesterday, a hand-count of NOM’s rally resulted in 76 attendees, versus 102 at the Equality Maine rally.

But don’t take our word for it. Check out the pictures that Brown posted in his NOM missive:

Seems to back up what Danny and Robert said about the Maine rally, doesn’t it?

Our hearts go out to the good folks of Argentina today who stood up for marriage. Check out this demonstration opposing same-sex marriage–70,000 people or more!

Meanwhile, on Argentina, Brown posted pictures of a “pro-marriage” demonstration in Buenos Aires, but conveniently sidestepped any mention that Argentina legalized same-sex marriage last night:

Our hearts go out to the good folks of Argentina today who stood up for marriage. Check out this demonstration opposing same-sex marriage–70,000 people or more! A new movement has been birthed in Argentina and will continue to fight for what is right. We here in America salute your courage in speaking truth to power!

Um, is someone in denial or what?

It’s clear that the closer people look at NOM, the more they realize that they represent a house of cards that will inevitably be consigned to the dustbin of history, along with all of the other anti-progressive and anti-equality reactionary social conservative movements of the past. Like Courage’s Rick Jacobs said in our press release about the NOM Tour Tracker:

“As public opinion continues to shift in support of marriage equality, it’s clear that the greatest antidote to the lies at the foundation of NOM’s bigotry is truth.”

As long as NOM is misleading the American people about marriage equality, we’ll be there to set the record, er, straight.

How very interesting. I’m glad this post answered the questions I had just asked in an earlier post. I have a question (or two) for everyone: Do you think people didn’t show up for NOM’s bus tour because they believe they have been defeated given the recent news OR do you think that this is indicative of an actual changing of minds and hearts?

They think it’s over – at least here in Maine.
It’s now a non-issue, they’ve won and now it will never change. Kinda like when the bad guy gets caught on TV shows they are put away for life, here they don’t understand that things don’t work that way.

Mainers believe everything they see on TV, they have a very limited view of the real world. Even my dad still calls blacks – coloreds. My dads the nicest guy ever, but he’s heard the black guys where he works call each other the N word so he assumes people just make a big deal out for attention.

Also today, on the subject of the DC court decision

NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MARRIAGE Vows US Supreme Court Appeal in DC Marriage Referendum Case

    http://www.nationformarriage.org/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=omL2KeN0LzH&b=5075187&ct=8531671&notoc=1

“The razor-thin majority on the DC Appeals court [5-4] got it wrong when they said they owed substantial deference to the DC Council.”

But the razor thin majority on Prop 8 [52% to 48%] got it right?

Close only counts in horseshoes and grenades… and appellate courts ballot initiatives.

Silly Sagesse — the majority only gets it right when they side with the H8’ers. When the majority sides with anyone else, that means the majority is wrong & needs to be dealt with aggressively.

Whoa, whoa hold on. Them’s fighting words NOM. Now you are after MY SON’S Marriage, married in DC in April. First you deny me the legal right to be the legal granparent to my twin grandchildren as my daughter is not permitted to be a legal co-parent, and now you are coming after my son. Maggie and Brown head this is war, a culture war and I am determined that you shall NOT WIN. When the hell did it happen that the citizens in this country get to vote on the constituitional rights of my children?????

Well, unfortunately I was unable to make it to NH today.
Wanted to be there, but life had other plans.

Brian Brown gives me the heevie geevies. I wonder if I can sue him & NOM for post traumatic stress. Just looking at him is bringing back years of brainwashing trauma.
I mean I’m white, straight, a Christian, a woman, a mother, I don’t have any kind of criminal record, not even a parking ticket – no one has more rights than I do and I’m darn cute too! Think I’ll win?

Brown makes me ashamed to be straight, a Christian and married.

The six kids are the only ones we know about. I wonder when we’ll find out one or more of them is gay.

Heck — six kids is enough to have one of each & have a couple of spares. ;o)~

Does the total of 76 attendees at the gNOMe rally include Brian, his wife, and their litter horde of children? ‘Cause that would mean only 68 other people showed up…

@ Ronnie, yeah…he does have what I refer to as “gay face” lol. In any case though, does it matter? Even if he is gay he has has a sheeat ton of support behind him and his confused ideology, in terms of dollars, and we need to be there at those bus stops AND ALWAYS in greater numbers. This is a huge “local media campaign” for NOM. If the news reports that the crown of pro-gay marriage people was greater in every state that they stop in then I think people will look at this whole thing differently. I wish to heck that they were coming to Fresno. =-$

New day SOS. It is now 3am here in France. Over 9 hours ago the NOM rally in New Hampshire finished. Again P8TT posts NOTHING about what happened. I am not asking for pictures or video are even pretty prose. Just a comment in this topic for example, of what went down. I do not see why those two Courage Campaign dudes out east (who I donated money to send out there) can’t pick up the phone and call Eden and Eden adds a comment with the full story to follow later. I do not understand this, and this is now 2 days in a row.

And before anybody jumps down my throat please consider what I have asked for. Dudes out east calls Eden, Eden adds a comment to an already exisiting topic of a few key points of what happened in New Hampshire. If Eden is to busy to take their call and post a comment, then give the Dudes Kathleen’s number she will do it I am postiive.

It drives me crazy, this is vitally important to me and my family (the success of NOM), and I literally can’t go to sleep at night because I am on edge waiting to find out what happened. Right now it is 3am my time and sleep will not come to me any time soon.

Take away the guy driving the bus and Brian’s family and the out of state speakers it was probably about Equal, hey now there is a nice word, Equal. :)

I’m not sure what will turn out to be ‘normal’ press coverage for each of these events, but I was expecting reasonable local coverage. Hasn’t seemed to happen today. Perhaps it depends on the location (NH is done talking marriage equality?) or how good their advance team is. A lot of coverage today on the DC decision… perhaps that drew attention away.

“Together with my wife and six kids, we set off in the NOMmobile to let folks know that marriage is on the move!

Marriage is on the move? I thought his whole schtick was that marriage was absolute and unchanging…?

And 6 kids? Really? heh, ok.

Um, is someone in denial or what?

Talk about truth to power. :)

And I’m sure what followed were the pleas for money.

Oddly enough, in checking my Hater mailbox, Mr. Delgaudo hasn’t weighed in yet. I’m sure that missive will be entertaining as well when it arrives :)

Just a bit on information about Maine-it was the “whitest” state in the union as of the 2000 census. It might be again for 2010 or at least #2. There is little to no racial diversity in most of the state and what there is is usually in college towns, the Portland area, and Lewiston (where there is a community of Somalis).

Not to say this is bad or good, but when I moved here from Los Angeles in the late 1990s, it was definitely something I noticed…

6 kids?? I pay $2k a year towards school taxes for schools I don’t have children in to subsidize the cost of education for others. I’m completely willing to because my education (including college and postgrad) was all in public schools, and I consider this a way of repaying what was given to me.

It’s really difficult to swallow someone with 6 kids complaining about what’s fair, or how costs will increase if gay people have the right to marry. How about, stop having kids?!
