Show us what really happened on Brian Brown’s summer vacation: Create a NOM tour mashup video!

By Rick Jacobs
Chair, Courage Campaign Institute

Eden sent me that Brian Brown fantasy tour summer video last night. I dropped what I was doing to watch it because I needed a break from reality. Thank you Brian, for delivering!

Mr. Brown hides behind obfuscation, camera angles and his barricade of lies built on fear to create a fictional account of the National Organization for Marriage’s “One Man, One Woman” summer tour. Yet this community, right here on P8TT, took apart that video in the space of a couple of hours. Straight Grandmother, Jonathan, Gregory in SLC and so many others wrote from your souls and your memories because you have been to the events, you have watched the entire tour, you have read the trial transcripts, and you have shaped our strategy. Most importantly, you have lived the lives that have been and are damaged by NOM’s angry bus tour.

Eden mentioned that Courage would produce a video that tells the real story of this summer. You already know what that story is: NOM is desperate. The “One Man, One Woman” tour generated little more than one man and one woman at each stop. From its supporters speaking in tongues and calling for the murder of gay people, to police threatening Courage’s Tour Trackers with arrest at NOM’s behest, NOM has been unmasked as a fringe group masquerading as mainstream.

But don’t take my word for it. Brian Brown has also acknowledged the folly of this tour, in an interview with a right-wing publication that characterized Brown as “frustrated” by his shrinking base of supporters and the “slow abandonment” of his cause by the conservative media.

Now, as public opinion continues to shift in support of equality, even Ken Mehlman, the former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair under George Bush II, has come out of the closet and supports Judge Walker’s heroic and historic ruling.

Mr. Brown and his shoeless sister, Maggie Gallagher, are fast realizing that whatever support they once enjoyed is about to be consigned to the dustbin of history as more and more people see the truth behind NOM’s agenda, and the loving families they seek to subjugate.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. Lives are still ruined and lost every day because of the prejudice and anti-family vitriol spewed by NOM. After all, look at what happened yesterday in Kansas.

Our collective job remains to show that the debate around the freedom to marry is all about family, about Felix and Kirill, about raising children in a supportive environment. And we have to keep telling those stories for years to come until America finishes its inexorable march toward justice and equality.

So here’s an idea for the P8TT community. Can you answer the Brian Brown summer vacation flick with a video of your own? Whether serious or funny, we would love to see what you can produce! You are very talented. You know the facts. You know this is really about love. Can you create a mashup of Brian Brown’s video that tells the truth about NOM’s tour and maybe provides a few laughs along the way?

Who can forget when NOM launched their unintentionally hilarious “Gathering Storm” video? The response from marriage equality advocates was just as funny, but intentionally so, as any Google search for Gathering Storm mashup videos demonstrates. Here’s one of my favorite mashup spoofs of NOM’s unforgettable video:

Yes, “Gathering Storm Chasers” was funny, but your video can be serious as well. Whatever inspires you to get creative.

Think about the incidents during the NOM tour that most affected you during NOM’s tour. Was it the man with the “noose” sign? Was it a family that really wanted simply to be a family but were being told they are not good enough? Was it the photos of the podium isolated by a sea of black top, surrounded by ten lonely staffers at the “big NOM rally” in Lima, Ohio? How about all of those great stats on the NOM tour that Adam put together?

If you need more material, just scroll back through the NOMTourTracker.com archives for a month’s worth of posts, pics and videos.

Let’s show the real Brian Brown summer vacation video, the one that has no followers, no energy and no future. The one that wants to divide families, attack judges and that does not trust America.

What do you say? You always rise to the occasion. Give it a go!

UPDATE BY EDEN: Not that I need to say so, but feel free to use this as an Open Thread to talk about Rick’s post above or whatever is on your mind…

It is important to me to really tell everyone that I have never had this kind of community acceptance before. Thank you all!

I just wrote a letter to the editor of LifeSiteNews regarding the piece about Brian Brown and the tour:

    Writer Kathleen Gilbert’s assertion that

the basic instinct that makes up part of the very fiber of our thinking: boy meets girl, they fall in love, they get married and have kids. There are other kinds of love, of course, but romantic love is none other than this – and if portrayed to be otherwise, its aesthetic value (as wedding advertisers will generally admit) mysteriously vanishes

is both completely false and offensive. Who is she to speak for the lives of gay and lesbian citizens? How dare she claim that romance can exist only when the two people involved are not the same gender. We are not slaves to our genitals, thinking only of sex; we are real people who fall in love just as passionately as straight people.

Furthermore, to state the “aesthetic value (as wedding advertisers will generally admit) mysteriously vanishes” is a patently absurd statement to make, especially when including the vague claim about wedding advertisers admitting it. Unless, of course, she is referring to people who advertise straight weddings and disapprove of gay ones.

    “Frightening is the word.”

Here, I will agree. It is frightening that she and others are willing to throw out two of the founding principles of our country (equality for all and freedom of religion), in order to deny equality to certain citizens based upon religious doctrine.

Finally, she makes a reference to “the Creator God, which even pagan society acknowledged.” Is she is trying to make the tired, old, incorrect claim that “the parts don’t fit,” in a roundabout way? If that is the case, she is quite incorrect. Or perhaps she’s making the “it’s unnatural” claim. Again, she would be incorrect. Homosexual pair bonding and sexual activity has been observed throughout the non-human animal kingdom, in addition to among humans.

Good for you! I hadn’t followed up that link to read the article before (it’s the one in the main post describing Brown as “frustrated”, and it’s also here).

I followed a link to another LifeSiteNews piece about GOProud, Homocon and Ann Coulter (am I the only one who finds the name “Homocon” to be hilarious?).

Apparently I’ve been living under a rock, because I did not know that Homocon isn’t a party, it’s a “party”, and also I am apparently a homosexualist activist. What an awkward word “homosexualist” is. Try saying it ten times fast. “Homosexualist activist” is even harder.

Maybe I should have it put on buttons and t-shirts. It could be kind of catchy, except for that pronunciation thing.

      Thanx Sagesse… I would havemissied this…

You all have to read at least this part:

A final way in which this turning point has been apparent this summer is the response to the National Organization for Marriage’s ”Summer for Marriage” tour. Far from energizing communities to oppose ”gay marriage,” the near-universal result, in city after city, was a far more engaged and motivated pro-marriage equality counter-action that often drew more people.

That response, then, impacted the message in media reports from Minneapolis – ”Dueling rallies with little hitch,” headlined the Star Tribune – to Atlanta, where The Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted that NOM had ”20 or so protesters” compared to ”more than 150 counter-protesters.”

”The press would emphasize the imbalance in the numbers, [NOM President Brian] Brown said,” the report added.

This ”Summer for Marriage” – contrary to Brown’s aim and closer to the professors’ point – has been significant, but not just for the numbers at the rallies. It has provided significant evidence among hard-core activists, politicians and the population at large that a turning point has indeed been reached.

Robert and I have already been together for 27 yrs so highly doubt getting a legal marriage license will lead us to divorce…Robert is stuck with me forever :-)

I have no doubt in my mind however that there will be a lot of divorce among our ranks….in my opinion because some couple will rush into a marriage without being sure or being ready.
It will make me beyond angry to hear the anti-gay crowd gloating and giving us the whole ‘We told ya so’ shit.

I so wish ‘they’ would address their own divorce issues and leave us the hell alone!

Wherever marriage equality occurs, the first big rush of marriages include a large percentage of couples who have already been together for many years. This will most likely result in statistically very low divorce rates among same sex couples who married during the first year or so after it became legal for them to do so. After that, I predict that the divorce rate among LGBT couples will gradually begin to adjust until it is about the same as opposite sex couples, since the LGBT couples will no longer include these large numbers of couples who have already been in stable long-term relationships prior to getting married.

That means one of two things–you either have a very busy, very virile rooster, or a very fertile hen! When you find out which one it is, BZ said you need to clone that one!

      • 49. Kate  |  August 26, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Sorry to disappoint you and BZ, Richard, but neither is the case. A little biology lesson here…… roosters are no more necessary for hens to produce eggs (which they do daily) than male humans are for female humans to produce eggs (which they do montly). Now, here’s the part the Prop 8 wingnuts will like — the rooster is only necessary if you want the eggs to be fertilized. And, sorry, but it’s not the sign of a Super Hen either (although I like the image). When pullets (young chickens who are laying their first eggs), which these are, begin laying, their oviduct and egg-release system isn’t fine-tuned yet. Sometimes they release more yolks than one for the shell to enclose; sometimes you’ll even find eggs with no yolks. Sometimes no shell at all, just a complete egg contained in a thick membrane. Those are pretty common, and double-yolks are as well. But triple…. this is a memorable event for this flock here at the ranch! You won’t need many triple-yolkers for your challah….. (or roosters, either).

Did you know that if you Google “Brian Brown Bigot” the thrid post to come up is mine on Prop8TT. I am going to keep it up, sometimes using his full name with middle initial sometimes not. I am very consistant whenever I type his name to also type Bigot. Usually when I type Maggie Gallagher I usually type Maggie H8ter Gallagher but now I think I will move to the tradtional spelling of hater. Maggie Galagher Hater. These people are PURE EVIL.

We are getting through “Brian Brown Bigot” is now Number 3 on Google he-he.

I will be forever grateful for Rick Jacobs, Eden James and the whole ground crew who tailed the #FAILNomSummerOf MarriageTour. You brought us along so we could participate and boy did we ever. It is absolutly delightful to hear Brian S Brown the Bigot from NOM admit that it was a #FAIL.

If I get a chace I’ll try and record a video of me commenting on the NOM Summer of Marriage Tour with Maggie Gallagher the Hater from NOM. I only have the built in camera on my laptop so I don’t know if it will work or not. Then maybe LLB can edit it for me.

I don’t have the technology or skill to do something like this, but I think a powerful counter-video would be a serious one depicting the tangible examples of hatred we have seen and heard about at the NOM rallies. The man with the noose sign; the young man saying “that’s not a family” about same-sex couples, and “that’s half a family” of single-mother families. Show them for what they really are. Because they are trying to come off as compassionate and non-wacky to the public, and I think they succeed– the majority of NOM members / donors in this country did not attend these rallies and do not read our blog. The mail they get from NOM is very professional, compassionate, and mainstream. sounding. They should see what the other members and donors do and say.
