Ann Coulter at GOProud’s “Homocon” last night: “Once they find the gay gene, guess who’s getting aborted”

By Jeremy Hooper

Saturday night at GOProud’s “HomoCon” fundraiser in NYC, Ann Coulter reportedly (and predictably) said this nugget of whatever-ness to a room full of gay people:

Marriage “is not a civil right – you’re not black,” Coulter said to nervous laughter. She went on to note that gays are among the wealthiest demographic groups in the country.

“Blacks must be looking at the gays saying, ‘Why can’t we be oppressed like that?’”

*MORE: They’re gay, conservative and proud [Politico]

But despite how thoroughly tiresome the act seems like it’d be for the performer at this point, Ms. C apparently didn’t limit her bizarre need to jib and jab her way through any and every speech at just the above marriage comments. Journalist Megan Carpentier tweeted these other charming takeaways from her vantage point on site:

Coulter: the gays “ought to start being antiabortion because “once they find the gay gene, guess who’s getting aborted”

Coulter now on about pre-marital sex, “fisting in schools” and liberals who “aren’t really gay they just hate dad” #homocon

Ann Coulter, “I happen to be religious.” She then parrots the pro-Prop 8 arguments that failed at trial. #homocon

@megancapentier [Twitter]

6A00D8341C503453Ef0133F2E32117970B-1Offensive quips passed off as jokes? Shock value? An odd need to divide rather than unite? Uh huh. So basically it sounds like GOProud got the exact Ann Coulter that they sought: One who as a pundit makes a good agitator/performance artist, and who as a gay activist makes a good, uhm — reason to stay home and watch this week’s DVRed “Modern Family” episode instead?

But hey, such is GOProud’s organizational right, making bookings like these. All going up against the reality of GOProud’s political right: A movement that still uses words like “traditional marriage” and still votes in a unanimous senatorial block against DADT repeal.

Exactly! Who the hell did they think she was going to be? She is very good at staying on her message, and she was on her own game, as offensive as her drivel is. I really wish that many of those who have a large following to eat up filth like hers were on thewitness stand as examples of animus.

Right, this speaks more to the unserious — and suspect? — nature of GoProud. They’re motivated by something, but it certainly isn’t gay rights. The phrase “useful idiots” comes to mind. Perhaps the nervous laughter in the audience was the first glimmer of realization for some of our conservative brothers and sisters that they are being duped and used.

@icapricorn #9 – The term “useful idiots” is right. So is the term “gay Nazis.” The far right is very happy to have them around, until they pose a threat to the party structure or are no longer useful. Then the Long Knives are pulled out of their sheaths and thrust into them, just as they were on June 30, 1934.

Ann S.: Just stumbled across this on Gaypatriot.org:

“Perhaps the greatest difference between Log Cabin national, as it was from my initial involvement in 1995 through the leadership of Patrick Guerriero in the middle part of the first decade of the current century and GOProud is that it often seemed the former organization was always apologizing for being Republican — as if that partisan affiliation were something to be ashamed about — while the latter group has showed a real pride in being conservative.

They get that we don’t need change what it means to be conservative to show that one can be both conservative and gay. They understand what true conservatives have long understood, there is no inherent contradictions between being conservative and gay. At least since the rise of the modern right, with the nomination of Barry Goldwater as the GOP’s standard bearer in 1964, through the nomination and election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 to the Contract with America in 1994 and the growth of grassroots protest against big government (AKA the Tea Party) in the past year, American conservatism is based on the idea (and ideal) of freedom.”

That comment is completely realistic, though. That’s what makes it so offensive and scary. So if they discover a “gay gene” some time, what is to prevent people from aborting gay babies, or from labeling us as genetic defects? It seems to be something to fear.

I just logged off, but then had another thought: most people who are vehemently against equality are usually deeply religious. Is that correct according to our current knowledge? Because then they would be against abortion, but also against gays. Kinda stuck. Just food for thought. See you all (and your comments!) in the morning.

You know, if they have the technology to discover such a specific gene, (and it’s more likely to be a whole constellation of genes, some of which may be tied in with highly desirable attributes ) they will have the technology to discover a lot of other sorts of gene constellations. Birth selection will explode with a whole set of ethical-legal questions.

We’re conjecturing about a futuristic world that may never be and that most likely will evolved along with its technology. Birth selection ethics, at first ham-handed, will probably become increasingly sophisticated and aware. Also, it is more than probable that a gay child may not elicit the same perceived disadvantages as one perhaps does now.

At this point, the question is theoretical, and actually none of our business. It will be the challenge for another generation in another time — if it will be at all.

There was a short-lived TV show several years ago called Century City. I hesitate to call it a science fiction show, but it was set in the future. But there were no rocket packs and flying cars. The purpose of the show was to look at laws that might be coming to a courtroom near you sometime in the future. It was a great way to examine social questions that we are now facing.

One episode specifically dealt with the idea that a couple discovered that their yet to be born son was going to be gay, and they had to figure out how to deal with the situation–should he be aborted, should he be “fixed” in the womb, that sort of thing. It was a very moving episode, as were many of the cases they tried. I was very disappointed when the show ended after only about 8 episodes. Glad I have them all archived.

(And yes, they came to terms with the fact that he would be gay, and allowed their son to be born and live just as he was.)

I don’t think there would not be many doctors who agreed to test for a “gay gene”, and fewer who would arrange an abortion if it were detected.

And as it will take a while to locate genetic markers like that, more and more of society will not be freaked out by gays, or the possibility of having a gay child.

And what would the accuracy prediction be? Would parents abort their child if there was only a 55% chance the test were accurate? Mothers bond with the child they’re carrying very early.

I don’t see this as a tangible threat.

Carpool Cookie, I agree with you, I don’t think of this as a threat. There might be some people who will look to see if a child is a boy or a girl and abort for the want of the other, but I seriously don’t think people will look to see if a child might be gay or straight.

Shallowness in some goes only so far, it’s those people who shouldn’t be parents. I actually think even the most homophobic would not even spend the money or time on something this absurd.

What I like about this one is it’s a LAWSUIT…which means either depositions, etc., or a big fat out-of-court settlement. The young men were 17 and 18 years old.

Though I’m not religious, myself, something that was pointed out in the documentary Deliver Us from Evil is that not only are these parrishoners sexually abused, but since their abuser is a religious leader, their faith is abused, as well. Which is very sad. It’s hard enough trying to find some sort of peace with “god” without your pastor drawing you into sex.

I could go along with labelling him a gay pedophile (seems rare) but the ages of the boys make me think he’s gay.

His sexual orientation is irrelevent. The point is he is a power-hungry pervert who stands accused of taking advantage of young men who were looking to him for guidance and mentoring.

It is quite possible for a man to molest or rape another man and not be gay. Rape has less to do with sexual attraction and more to do with power and control.

right, but can’t we get amici filed on our behalf pointing to this type of animus? i mean, why not have groups submit amici that clearly demonstrate the LEVEL of animus around this issue.in addtion to groups submitting amici rebutting all the other ‘scientific’ BS??!?

        legal minds, what u think?

I’ll betcha Olson & Boies are already hard at work lining up countering amicus briefs (‘amici’ still sounds weird… sounds like you’re talking about Don Ameche) for each of these homophobic things, and I’ll betcha each one will say something like: “… and since each and every single citation of [Hate group name here] is 100% false, there can be only one conclusion: they are only here to try to harm the LGBTQQIIA community…”

I can’t wait for our rebuttal… it’s gonna be soo much fun :)

In the district court, the parties submitted briefs specifically to respond to the amicus briefs on the other side. You can see them here, #604 = Proponents’; #607 = Plaintiffs’
        http://dockets.justia.com/docket/california/candce/3:2009cv02292/215270/

I don’t know if something similar is allowed in the appeals court. But if not, then perhaps the parties respond to them in the answer brief (plaintiffs’) and reply brief (proponents).

Speaking as a scientist, I can assure you there is no one “gay gene.” There is certainly a genetic component, and more broadly, sexual orientation is a biological trait, but like most things is biology our inherent qualities result from a vast network of interactions. But then again, Ann Coulter doesn’t believe in evolution, so you should never trust her opinions on science ever, ever, ever.

But haven’t some neurologists pointed out some differences in the brains of conservatives v. liberals? though being a conservative isn’t the same thing as being a bigmouth lying political tool.

Gee, if we could only isolate the Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh gene….guess who’s getting aborted, Ann?

Elizabeth, when I read …a bigmouth lying political tool, I had a flashback to 9 to 5, though he was a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot…. pretty close.

If anything needs to be taken from the genetic confluence is the stupid gene, the evil gene…and a cure for schizophrenia would be nice.

Nervous laughter at Ann Coulter’s jabs at their expense?!

It’s one thing to be a gay republican conservative, it’s another to invite someone to a media event that slaps your face, ridicules your struggles and shows no respect to the forum you gave her access to.
She was being Ann Coulter alright.
Doesn’t mean gay people deserve her!

so being gay is a free-will choice or is it genetic?

Wait – so being gay isn’t genetic, like being black, so gays don’t get to marry – but it is genetic, so we need to repeal reproductive rights?

    This woman is fucking terrible.

@ rf at #41: A true pedophile properly is classified as neither gay nor straight. He or she is a person sexually attracted to children. of either gender.

Although they may not be classified as straight or gay, according to the study in Rob’s video, it appears that the vast majority of pedophiles of both boys and girls are straight-identified. so in this sense, if the video is correct, a “gay” pedophile would be rare.

I guess the question I would have is, is a pedophile actually sexually attracted to children or are they attracted to the access to and/or power over children that lets them play out whatever is going on in their head. Or are there both kinds? I am definitely no expert on this stuff.

Is it not possible for GOProud to find a conservative/republican who doesn’t hate gays?

What, exactly, does GOProud have to be proud of? Their self-hatred?

So let me get this right, the 14th amendment only applies if your skin color happens to be brown. Otherwise, it doesn’t apply according to Coulters arguments.

So by the same logic, the 14th amendment does not apply to a corporation, seriously, how can a corporation be black?

I’d love to see her worm her way out of that one.
