NOM NOM NOMing through more coverage of NOM’s first day on tour in California

Column as I see ’em:

  • I didn’t have a chance to write this last night, but my first thought on day one of the tour is that NOM is just incredibly lazy. For those who have knocked on doors in an electoral campaign, you know the value of targeting — you target your persuadables and your lean voters, for example. You don’t just walk into your local farmacia and start talking to people — it’s an inefficient use of time. They might not even be U.S. citizens.

Except that’s what NOM is doing. Nearly all of their stops are in random parks all over the state where there could be anyone — from a group of ex-convicts to the local weekly gay book club meeting. Yesterday night’s stop was at an On The Border, a Tex-Mex restaurant chain filled with… wait for it… white folks. One stop, tomorrow morning, is at the Jelly Belly factory. Is this some Latino tourist hotbed and we just don’t know it yet?

One commenter wrote last night why we’re doing this if no one shows up. This is exactly why we’re doing it — to show how this is a waste of people’s time and money. It’s lazy organizing and part of the reason we’re doing this so they never again can get that $1 million to launch a campaign that includes a fancy bus tour with paid staff. Or be the largest single contributor to Yes on 1 in Maine. Or run misleading but effective ads during the Prop 8 fight. On and on.

  • Speaking of Jelly Belly, we here at P8TT/NTT are officially inquiring into what exactly the company thinks of this tour stop on their property, as well as their positions on LGBT equality, Prop 8, and the like. Stay tuned.
  • Here’s the first on-the-road video produced by the Vota Tus Valores team. It looks like it was filmed by a hummingbird observing the scene.
  • P8TT/NTT friend Karen Ocamb has her take on the first day, including more background on Alfonso Aguilar and our old friend Brian Brown’s statement on the tour.
  • Yesterday, NOM filed a lawsuit that would allow it to flaunt Rhode Island’s election laws by running ads (targeting the gubernatorial race, where two pro-marriage equality candidates, Frank Caprio and Lincoln Chafee, are leading in the polls) without disclosing contributors or complying with spending laws. It is pretty remarkable how much they spend on legal fees, given the numerous lawsuits of this nature they’re filed in several states, not to mention ethics violations in places like Maine.
  • The silence from @NOMTweets and the NOM blog on the California tour sure is deafening. I don’t see a single post or tweet in the last week, at least. Do they not want to be closely associated with a mess?
  • They did find time last night to trumpet their several days-old “dynamite” amicus brief filing in the 9th Circuit, though. My favorite line:

They want this court to short-circuit the hard task of persuading their fellow citizens that their unions ARE marriages, by asking this court to re-educate the voters and re-assign the meaning of a word.

To which I respond with the quote of the year in my book:

“Most people use the term “judicial activism” to explain decisions they don’t like.” — Ted Olson, August 8, 2010

  • We’ll have coverage today from our NOM Tour Tracker team at the events — if you can call them that — at the State Capitol in Sacramento, along with Yuba City, Davis (just before tonight’s California gubernatorial debate), and elsewhere. Coverage from the first three stops will be up late this afternoon, and from the last three stops this evening.

Entry filed under: NOM Exposed, NOM Tour Tracker-California, Right-wing.

Sacramento stop appeared to be all staffers. It helps if you block a sidewalk next to the Capitol so that anyone walking by makes it look like you have more numbers.

I loved how the people walking and biking around the capital were trying to use the sidewalk, but kept having to dodge the NOM people…so they just walked in front of them and their “press conference”. For their “press conference” they used their bus as a backdrop…you’re at the freakin’ capital building…don’t you think that would have made a better one?? You can take pictures of your bus any day.

One guy passed me, did a “thumbs down” and asked, “who are they talking to?”

They just kept re-arranging their staff, taking pictures, handing literature to each other and interviewing each other. It was laughable!

Did you hear any Spanish between them? Love the image of them handing each other literature. I guess they only need a few copies of each item that way. It can just keep making the same rounds among them. Could you tell if there was any literature in Spanish?

I, personally, didn’t hear them speaking to each other in Spanish, nor did I see any of their literature in Spanish. What I did see was in English, though I didn’t want to get too close to them for fear of them counting me as one of their supporters….although my “Won’t Back Down” HRC tshirt should have been a clue!

Their “press conference”, as someone else mentioned was in English, not Spanish…kinda defeats the purpose, no??

Most of the time they tried to give their literature away, people just shook their head and kept on walking.

Never mind the epic waste of time and money — though NOM seems to have no shortage of either. What about the carbon footprint of driving that monstrosity around an already polluted state? In the middle of a record-breaking heat wave coupled with nearly a perfect zero attendance record?

If NOM Tour I was “out of the mainstream and into the airstream”, they should bill NOM Tour II as, “out of the airstream and into the oxygen tent”.

Remember the anthrax in the mail about eight years back? I’m imagining a painfully stereotypical native, feather headdress, facepaint, the works, sitting at a desk like a news anchor and saying “The Department of Homeland Security refused to comment this morning on allegations that the smallpox infected blankets were distributed by a Christian extremist faction funded by several White Man nations…”

      D’aww, you make me blush!

As to the Spanish, I suspect it’s pretty bad. I’m hoping Gregory in SLC can get us some more detailed translations later. And really, I was expecting that sort of thing the moment I heard about the tour, because it’s so like them. I mean, it’s just completely in character for them to cover the whole thing with tacky “Look! It’s Mexican!” crap that’s clueless not only about Mexican culture, but American culture as well.

I’d have been genuinely surprised if they’d actually bothered to get one of the tens of millions of fluent Spanish speakers in this country to do their translations. It would have suggested competence.

They remind me of cargo cults; putting on the decorations and moving through the rituals without understanding or even trying to understand how things work.

I was curious about one of the pics on their Vota site that showed a big spit of meat being carved, and looked like what *I* see in Greek diners all the time, but have never noticed in a Mexican place. Is that meat thing common? I thought it was for gyros, and they had just put it in there because it was “ethnic”.

      • 41. Kate  |  September 28, 2010 at 11:22 am

I wondered about that meat photo, too, Anonygrl. I think it was nothing but a poor choice of clip art. It certainly isn’t representative of carne asada or of any other typically-Mexican wise use of meat photo.

I didn’t see the meat on a spit pic, but it sounds very Spanish to me–not Mexican. Its possibly Portuguese too (not sure, have much more experience with Spanish restaurants). So maybe they’re including South Americans in their messaging (Argentina/ maybe Brazil) or someone just did a search for Spanish and food and came up with it.

And while there may be some Spanish, Brazillian or Argentinian folk around, one would think the majority of their message to Hispanic folk in California would probably be aimed at the Mexican culture, wouldn’t one?

if we had a bus, rather than stop in parks, we’d find all the really hot clubs these folks party in, and boggie with them while explaining how we’re allies, and Nombies are a NONO.

Maybe we could convince Ricky Martin, to get the message across.

At the very least we could start a network, in our local clubs to talk with the latinos there, find a rallying point, which I think someone mentioned earlier, the Church is just using them for votes, but they got to convince their families if they support the gays, we’ll help them cause our goal is equality for all.

I just spoke with the Jelly Belly factory public relations department. They have no relationship or partnership with this bus tour, and it was a complete surprise to them that the NOM-like tour had chosen their gift shop as a stop. Jelly Belly reiterated that they are a diverse supportive organization that welcomes *everyone* and would never, ever give approval for this to happen on their lot.

It’ll be interesting to watch this tomorrow. The hate bus would of course be allowed to roll into the JB parking lot, but when they start lobbying, that must be stopped of course.

        Dear Kate,

Thank you for taking the time to write; we appreciate hearing your thoughts and concerns.

We were unaware of the “National Organization for Marriage” coming to visit prior to several emails that we received. We do not accept reservations for our free tours and tour buses often stop here for our free public tours. We have not rented any of our facilities for this group and no event or rally will be held here.

Thank you for being among our special Jelly Belly fans. We value your patronage.

        Dear Erin:

Thank you very much for your encouraging response. I am delighted to hear that I will be able to continue to enjoy my Jelly Bellies! The National Organization for Marriage is publicly annoucing a tour stop at your location, and news of that is rapidly spreading throughout the Equal Rights community online. I’d like to suggest that your PR department issue an equally-public refutal of NOM’s attempt to use your facilities and good name in order to head off any possible boycotts.

        Appreciatively,

I got the same response as everyone else. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the morning.

Also, someone mentioned above that the NOM bus will be allowed to roll into the parking lot, but I’m not 100% sure that’s the case. The JB parking lot is private property, and the company can bar them from even entering, I would think, if they know that the bus is there for a rally and not the free tour and gift shop. Of course they can’t prevent the NOMmers from doing going on the tour or shopping, unless they create a disturbance.

When Jelly Belly says “no event or rally will be held here” I hope that they are willing to enforce that, as is their right.

It’s extremely rude, to say the least, of NOM to announce that they are holding a rally in JB’s parking lot without even asking for permission. Not to mention that they are using JB’s name to promote their own cause, as they did with “On the Border”.

I also think they assume they’re totally mainstream and that most people and the vast majority of businesses must embrace their vision of the world. While it may not be the case that a majority of businesses are willing to make a public pro-equality statement, very few businesses are willing to endorse these rabid anti-equality organizations. It’s just bad for business.

Okay, so we’re leaving in 1/2 hour and heading in Willows. Since we’re expecting a lot of down time (we should arrive around 2:30) Mom is bringing her crochet and I’m trying to decide what book to bring. The choices are: Front Runner, Curious Wine, one of the Gay Wedding planners (I’m an Internet Preacher & like to be prepared) or Malice in Maggody. I’ve got my camera, and since we’re not aware of anyone meeting us, we’ll go straight to the park. I’ll be the blonde with the watch on. Has anyone else noticed that no one wears watches anymore? Can’t blog from there, it’s a farming community so not sure about local access. But then… maybe Starbucks.
We’ll let you know what we see. Or not see.

When I am stage managing, I am never without a watch… usually a big black clunky looking Timex sport watch with a stop watch and a countdown timer, both incredibly useful in my line of work.

I never ever wear it when I am not stage managing.

Oh… wait… I do. When I am scuba diving, I have to wear it. But otherwise, I use my cell phone anymore.

I called Jelly belly to ask if they were supporting NOM and their stop/rally at their gift shop. The consumer affairs manager said that they were not contacted to put this rally on, and the only way they were informed of it was through emails from upset customers. She then emailed me an official statement from corporate and gave me permission to post their official statement on blogs online.

    Carrie,

Thank you again so much for taking the time to verify the alleged “NOM Rally”. Following is the company’s response to inquiries we are receiving:

We were unaware of the “National Organization for Marriage” coming to visit prior to several emails that we received. We do not accept reservations for our free tours and tour buses often stop here for our free public tours. We have not rented any of our facilities for this group and no event or rally will be held here.

Jelly Belly does not allow any group to promote their special interests, pass out flyers, or approach our visitors for their own interests at our public tours. We appreciate your offer to share with your blog community.

I can email the statement to anyone who would like a copy to post on a blog.

Hi all! My home PC is now back up and running, and I have a report (such as it is) of one of the NOM BUSted tour stops.

Earlier today (Tuesday 9/28) NOM was scheduled to stop in Alameda, CA. Alameda is located adjacent to Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco. But the specific location of the tour stop was really weird. It was supposed to be at an old abandoned military base at the west end of Alameda Island. The only thing out there is a couple of makeshift soccer fields near the entrance and a hell of a lot of mothballed govorment buildings. And the whole facility is located at the very far end of a long dead-end road. It’s very remote.

So I arrived early and drove around the public areas and saw no sign of NOM (or anyone else). I then parked at the entrance to the complex and set up a couple of very large pro-equality signs, including a nice blue and white “Liberty and Justice for All” sign I got from AFER, that was handed out to the crowds during the celebration of the Prop8 trial ruling.

I waited until well past the time they would have had to leave in order to make it to their next stop, and never saw any sign of them entering or leaving (there’s only one way in or out).

So they “pulled a Phelps”. A no-show. Please insert sad trombone sound here. I’m interested to see what they have to say about this tour stop. I bet it was a ‘great success’.

Oh, Dpeck! I just looked at their official tour stop site, and the Alameda stop is TOMORROW (Weds.) But maybe you’d best camp out there tonight so you’ll be sure to have a place close to the front, you know, with all the crowds that will show up at that weird location you described.

I think I’ve been out there to tour the USS Hornet. We had a great tour guide and it was really fascinating. We got to sleep over as part of a Girl Scout event. It’s hard to get much sleep in a bunk surrounded by all the pings and other noises a metal ship makes when occupied by a lot of people, though. Still, it was worth it for the tour.

The USS Hornet is the ship that picked up the astronauts returning from the first successful moon landing. There are footprints painted on one of the decks that are supposed to represent Neil Armstrong’s first footsteps back on earth, as he walked from the lunar module to the isolation unit they made them stay in for a couple of weeks to make sure they were really healthy and weren’t going to contaminate all of earth with moon germs or something. The isolation unit is a converted Airstream trailer.

Sorry for the off-topic teal deer.

I met Nichelle twice, she told an audience once that this scene was filmed ‘on location’ without professional support actors. The cop you see in the clip is supposedly a real cop along with all the other people you see. (I am not sure about the passer by that has dialog though.)

I’m listening to the debate with Boxer and Fiorina.
Both seem to be reading texts, they seem to know most of the questions beforehand.
I once saw a real debate within a party, nothing like you see, but later on the press caught on with it and the party decided to show the video of the debate, I saw this too, but what I never saw during the debate was the the press asking questions, as to my knowledge there was no press there it was members only (my friend was – I’m no member of anything), so I saw a televised show edited and published that was different from what I saw and heard.
Why do I like the courage campaign ?
because you’re rocking the boat of some too smug people used to just put a band aid on the sinking ship.
My hope is that through education only the best comes out of us and build a new ship, it can only be done through education.
After you’ve won SSM please keep fighting for education for the poorest, you’ll have to convince them but think of it this way; if gang leaders defy the FBI they must have the brains to do it with no education it means they have brains that could be put to better use.
all I’m writing has happened to me. When I’ll feel like it again I’ll write another little story. I hope it cheers you up.
