Golden Oldies open thread, December 21st

December 21, 2010 at 5:30 pm 55 comments

An original version of this post was published on Sunday, December 19th, 2010. We’ll be having an open thread every night of the week leading up to Christmas for submissions on your favorite pieces of the year.

By Adam Bink

Over at my home blog, OpenLeft.com, we on the management team like to take the holidays off to rest, recharge, etc. While folks are often driven to write anyway because of current events or inspiration, what we do to keep things lively is feature past pieces that our readers particularly like. We call them “Golden Oldies”.

My tenure running the shop here ends on Christmas, as I plan to recharge as well (and travel), although I may continue at some point in the future. In the meantime, I decided to bring the same idea to P8TT. For the upcoming holiday season between Christmas and New Year’s, I’ll be re-posting some of the more interesting/provocative/brilliant front page pieces from P8TT’s history. The reason is because not everyone has a chance to read every piece throughout the year. As many of you know, if you Google “Prop 8 Trial”, it takes you here, and many folks who came here because they did that during the 9th Circuit hearing, or simply because they just heard about the blog, haven’t had a chance to read some of the better, more insightful pieces from the blog’s history.

So, we’d like to open up the floor to you to recommend your favorite stuff. It could be live-blogging from the Judge Walker’s district courthouse. It could be NOM tour posts, whether the national tour or the California tour. It could be a commentary piece you find particularly insightful that I did, or Eden, Julia, Rob, Jeremy Hooper, Karen Ocamb, Arisha, Rick, or someone else. Just leave a URL in the comments and we’ll pick the best suggestions. And of course, the management has ideas of our own.

To help you find the URLs, I recommend using the Categories “tags” on the right side of the page you’re currently viewing (they say Community/Meta, DADT Trial… NOM Tour Tracker… etc.). And if you want to go back to find earlier posts beyond the page you’re viewing, scroll down to the bottom and hit the “Older Posts” button. You can keep doing that to scroll back and back. Or, you could just use Google, and I recommend inserting the words “Prop 8 Trial Tracker” in your query along with whatever terms you remember, such as the author or topic. If you simply can’t find it, try asking your fellow P8TTers to help in the comments. And if you like someone’s nomination, be sure to leave a comment “second!” or “third!” or whatnot so we know what the good stuff is. An example is here.

I’ll be asking you as an open thread each night throughout the week leading up to Christmas.

So, what are your favorites?

One of my favorite parts of the trial was the day the Mayer of San Diego, Jerry Sanders, testified. But it’s not really a blog entry like most of the others.

In this season of peace and good will toward all people, I don’t wish for animosity and certainly not hate towards the NOM boggers who seem awfully obsessed with their own animosity and hate towards the good gay and lesbian people of this world. Really, all we need to do is leave it to them to realize their own internal angst and paranoia. Check out the most recent blogs on the NOM site. They are now going for each other’s throats and all because, in their world, the battle has come down to a line in the sand. Either you hate gay people and everything they represent or you are weak, sensitive to the concept that we are all members of the human race and therefore, a part of a larger fabric which is diverse and accepting of equality. This probably comes from their perceived colossal loss with DADT; the enemy has advanced and gay communism rears its ugly head. The good news in all of this? Look closely: you will find very few posts and the ones that are there deserve little to no reply.

The rank and file NOMNOMs are more pathetic than evil. Some of the leadership of the professional bigotry groups, however, cross the line into malevolence. I would love to see Scott Lively sitting next to David Bahati in the dock at a tribunal for crimes against humanity.

Scott Lively and David Bahati ARE crimes against humanity, simply by being alive.

Ah, no. What they do is an incredible affront to human rights and dignity, but they are not crimes against humanity by simply being alive. A human being cannot be a crime against humanity; it is their actions that can be.

A little bit of history – and a huge thank you to Steny Hoyer

Gay rights advocates say Dem leader Hoyer saved ‘Don’t ask’ repeal

When Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) led more than a dozen lawmakers onto a Capitol stage Tuesday to commemorate the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, she earned a minute-long standing ovation from a packed auditorium of gay rights supporters.

But behind the scenes, several leading gay rights advocates say it is Pelosi’s chief deputy and former rival, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), who deserves the lion’s share of credit for pushing the legislation across the finish line in recent weeks.

“He brought it back from the dead twice,” said Winnie Stachelberg, senior vice president at the Center for American Progress, who represented the liberal think tank in meetings on the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal bill.

In the aftermath of a legislative comeback story that surprised many on Capitol Hill, a host of lawmakers are taking a victory lap. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) has won praise for shepherding the bill through the Senate, while Rep. Patrick Murphy (Pa.), an Iraq war veteran who lost his seat in November, has earned recognition as the chief sponsor in the House.

Gay rights advocates describe Hoyer as the unsung hero of the painstaking push to end the military ban, giving him the kind of praise on gay rights more often reserved for the Speaker from San Francisco.

“At the moment where it was critical to get this done, Hoyer really stepped up to the plate and made it a priority,” said Steve Elmendorf, a Democratic lobbyist and gay rights advocate.

The vice president of the Human Rights Campaign, Fred Sainz, said Hoyer made the repeal effort “a personal cause of his.”

The advocates said their praise for Hoyer was not a criticism of Pelosi, whose commitment to ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” they said, never wavered.

“The Speaker has been for repeal of DADT since 1993. She’s an ardent supporter of LGBT equality,” Stachelberg said.

Yet at two crucial points during the year-long effort, Hoyer’s involvement proved key, advocates said. And it was his late push to separate the repeal from a broader Defense authorization bill – which aides and advocates said came over initial objections from Pelosi – that ultimately won the day.

Hoyer has not been shy about touting his role in the repeal effort, and his office provided The Hill a detailed timeline of his work on the legislation both through May and in December. The majority leader noted in a press briefing Tuesday morning that the bill “was written at this table.” “I am very proud of that,” Hoyer told reporters.

I take particular offense at this strawman argument:

We also show that those who would redefine civil marriage, to eliminate sexual complementarity as an essential element, can give no principled account of why marriage should be (1) a sexual partnership as opposed to a partnership distinguished by exclusivity with respect to other activities[…]

Who says it has to be a sexual relationship? People who can’t or don’t want to have sex should still be able to marry.

McConnell has been bitter ever since he had to leave Ohio for Kentucky after the folks in Ohio figured out how he was ripping them off and playing them for fools, resulting in his being voted out of office in Ohio before he could make it to the national stage.
