NOM’s new DOMA toy

As Jeremy notes, NOM’s DefendDOMA site is now live, with this clutching-at-pearls video:

And they’re trying to raise a million bucks. They’ll never get there, but it’s a nice round number, and is frankly freaky if true that someone actually gave them a million bucks (which they will avoid disclosing, of course).

As I’ve written before, my mantra is also telling people what you will do with their contribution. NOM doesn’t tell you a thing regarding what they’ll besides build a pretty website, just “defend DOMA”.

Meanwhile, we’re $2,900 short of the finish line on our fundraiser to fund P8TT and our work, and this morning we sent an e-mail from Rep. Jerry Nadler, the lead sponsor of DOMA in the House, to our members. Check his note out below, and please sign up for our campaign. NOM specifically mentions defeating the Nadler bill on their site. We’re going head to head and they’re going to lose in the long run. Let’s beat them quicker.

We’re going to move forward with an exciting announcement later this week to do some old-fashioned on the ground organizing to get more co-sponsors in Congress.

Subject: My bill to repeal DOMA
To: Adam Bink

Courage Campaign

Dear Adam,

Last week, I was extremely proud to re-introduce the Respect for Marriage Act — legislation that would repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) — in the House of Representatives.  Following President Obama’s bold announcement that he considers DOMA unconstitutional and will not defend it in court, and the repugnant decision of the House Republican Leadership to defend DOMA in court, the Respect for Marriage Act is now more important than ever.  And the great news is that Senator Dianne Feinstein has now introduced a companion bill in the Senate.

Our battle for civil rights and marriage equality for LGBT Americans has reappeared on the national forefront — where it should be — and we will need help from all corners to be victorious.  We can build co-sponsorship here in Congress, but we’ll never triumph until we build a mass movement that can make calls, write letters, and mobilize our fellow citizens at a moment’s notice.

While California’s Proposition 8 case winds its way through the courts and DOMA remains on the books, gay and lesbian couples will continue to suffer.  Here in my New York City district, home to one of the largest gay and lesbian communities in the world, I cannot sit idly by as people are subject to discrimination or persecution.  But we can do something about it.

With President Obama’s decision and Senator Feinstein joining our team, we are closer than ever to repealing DOMA.  But we still need a mass movement out there so that, when we regain the House, we will have enough votes to win this.

That’s why I need your help.  Can you join our movement?  Courage Campaign and I will be reaching out to you as the campaign moves forward.

I wish I could give more but alas, tapped out until the end of the month.

That said, NOM did a slap-dash on that site. It doesn’t work in Firefox or Chrome. Only works in IE.

And while I’m on the subject, you can subvert the use of their send a message to send a supportive message. So go, register, use a throw-away email and a Google Voice number, know what the Bigots are up to!

I wonder why I am not surprised that NOM is using the pearl-clutching technique. Probably because it is the only thing they know how to do in order to give their lies the semblance of truth! And for those who say there is too much NOM stuff here lately, remember, NOM is the group that helped use those lies to pass Prop H8, so we have to cover what they are doing so that we can be forewarned and forearmed and better fight them.

I will be very interested to see what NOM will do with $1 million. Up until now, they have funded state battles. They stayed out of DADT because it wasn’t marriage related. How are they going to insert themselves into a congressional vote in the House and the Senate? Whatever it is, they’ll need more than $1 million.

They forgot to mention in their video (although the images make it clear) that marriage is between “one man and one woman” – of the same race. I shouldn’t be surprised, but it never fails to amuse me. These same videos could have been running during the fight against interracial marriage with minimal changes in content.

That hand on the bible thing… it doesn’t look like Obama’s hand… I am not sure it is a bible either. (I am sure that it is not one that is actually read and used…. those kind of bibles are not for that sort of thing!)

It looks like Obama to me – it looks like the sleeve and gloves that Michelle was wearing and I know Obama used Lincoln’s bible and it looks like the right size.

Those are totally Michelle’s gloves and coat sleeve from the day I was glued to the TV….. I guess that’s there way of saying that he’s violated his oath by not defending (don’t bother splitting hairs with them over the difference between defending and enforcing) DOMA…..

Doh. Just watched the video AFTER replying. Of course, it helps to do things the other way around….

Yeah, I caught that too. The fact that they did not intentionally lie concerning defending vs enforcing. I wonder why the sudden lack of clearly blatant dishonesty? Usually NOM has no problem lying about easily verifiable things.

Anyway, regarding the picture above… I wasn’t really looking closely, rather, I was a little upset over the whole bible thing. Why not a Torah, Bahvad Gita, Qur’an and a Book of Shadows (any BoS would due…) How about a Jefferson bible? Short and to the point!

Can’t wait to see what the first principled atheist President does.

This may be stretch (for some of you anyway) for humor, but here goes…

To quote Bertha Beaumiller (talking to Vera Carp about the upcoming Smut Snatcher’s meeting):

“Vera – you know I don’t have strong feelings about ‘snatch’… And we’d have to change our letterhead!”

At which point, Vera scolds Lupe about the luke-warm coffee, and promises to go straight to the border patrol for her next “domestic helper”….

I couldn’t help myself, what with the “clutching-at-pearls” reference!
