Of course NOM’s misrepping Louis’ role. It’s the one constant of the Brown/Marinelli marriage

This statement is an outright misrepresentation:

“Louis worked in a volunteer capacity as a bus driver during our summer marriage tour. Around this time, he started pushing Facebook supporters towards NOM and we paid him as a part-time consultant for helping us expand our internet reach. He has since chosen a different focus. We wish him well.”

NOM Announces New Facebook Page! Wishes Louis Marinelli Well [NOM]

(A) Louis was not just the bus driver: He came up with this idea. We have well established that and he has confirmed it. NOM may have 6A00D8341C503453Ef0147E3D4Ceb3970Bhad a similar idea, but LJM was on it MONTHS before, as evidenced by his Twitter activity and subsequent comments.

(B) NOM fully took over Louis’ Facebook page. He didn’t just direct people to them — they took over a huge network that he spent years building! And he moderated the whole page, thus the reason why NOM lost it, today, upon his resignation.

(C) Oh, and that reductive part-time consultant thing? Bullcrap! Louis was on contract, reporting directly to Brian Brown. He was not a mere intern. I know this for fact.

And most importantly,

(D) He didn’t just choose a different focus: Louis Marinelli chose a different focus specifically because of what he witnessed while working with NOM and its supporters. This is not a minor distinction — it is fundamental.

We get it, NOM: It’s been a no good, terrible, bad day at the NOM/Opus Fidelis HQ. But you are the ones who reached out to Louis, even after he had put some truly vitriolic comments on the public record. OWN IT.

NOM’s continuing response to these events will be telling.

Wait…*gasp*…NOM is distorting the truth? What’s the world coming to?

(But seriously, CC, keep up the good work – don’t let them weasel out of this one)

I read louis’ statement. It’s very eloquent and comprehensive. His apology and recantation of his previous wrongs seems genuine. I was actually a touching piece, almost made me cry.

Nobody will be surprised that NOM will try to marginalize his role in their organization. To make it seem like it isn’t a big deal. Imagine Kim Jong ill’s son making a public statement that he now supports democracy. NOM won’t admit that grass is green if a gay person makes the claim.

I’d like to wish Louis good luck in his future plans. He is sure to be exposed to a lot of vitriol from both sides. Like the first scientists that figured out the earth was actually round. The future will probably see him and us on the right sideof history.

Louis’s statement may be comprehensive, but it certainly isn’t “eloquent.” What part of these statements do you find particularly “eloquent”?
“I personally do not agree with homosexuality and without any shame will continue to uphold my belief that homosexuality itself presents a public health concern due to the sexual diseases that are associated with it and that spread rapidly as a result of it. ” OR “…until the day comes that homosexual sex does not continue to spread HIV at alarming rates as it does today, I must stand by my comments that, from a public health stance, homosexuality is a harmful to society.”? OR “On multiple occasions I have said something to the effect of “homosexuality is wrong”. And in my opinion it is. My transition from an opponent of same-sex marriage to a supporter does not mean I suddenly think homosexuality is a good thing. ” OR “So what if it’s a mental disorder? It wouldn’t and shouldn’t disqualify gay men and women from civil marriage.” OR “The value I see in NOM’s work, even to this day, is the value of the work they do to promote marriage in general.”

I can certainly see why it “almost” made you cry.

All good points, but he IS entitled to his own OPINION.

The important point is that he is no longer pushing for LEGISLATION that promotes discrimination. And that is rather more than we could ever have reasonably hoped for from him, so we should be glad of it.

And there is still room to discuss the rest of it with him. He has the facts wrong about the health concerns. Those facts can be corrected. He still thinks NOM does other work to promote marriage in general. Frankly, I’ve never seen it, but he is entitled to that position.

But the important fact remains that on the civil, legal issue, he has reversed his stance. THAT is what counts, and it is all that we are asking ANY bigot to do.

Closing thought: at this rate, NOM will end up as just Brian and Maggie…so they really will live up to their motto of “One Man, One Woman!” ;-D

No worries, just type the bit in blue exactly as shown, no extra code, and it gets embedded automatically.

Muttley – blast from the past, thank you. :D

The bad news is that (once again) the strident anti-gay activists at NOM lie in order to keep the money coming in and enrich themselves at our expense.

The good news is that more and more Americans are choosing to walk away from the sin of homophobia. Louis is one of many. And therein lies our eventual victory in this cultural war hoisted upon us by radical anti-gay activists.

Another aspect of the ‘good news’ is the CC and supporters of civil marriage equality are reinforced in their efforts to make their cause visible and credible. ‘Being out’ makes a difference.
Your ‘bad news’ may not be all negative. That NOM misrepresents the circumstances needs to find its way into mainstream media as its misrepresentation is obvious. The public’s growing perception of NOM as a dishonest marriage broker needs to be reinforced with each opportunity that arises. Each time the credibility of NOM and its clones is tested and found wanting is a minute closer to its demise. G

If Louis was just a part time, volunteer, bus driver nobody then they wouldn’t be making this statement in the first place. NOM, save it.

i find the story on this guy irritating and dubious. i’m wondering about mental health issues. How can one turn on a dime about something as simple as equality? is this some strange internet thing, where people are all jacked up because they have an audience and the truth doesnt matter…just the rush to the ego…..the drama….

I dont want to focus on a guy whose been doing his best to do wrong against equal civil rights for all americans. I wouldnt be surprised if anger directed towards him makes him change his mind again. i wouldnt be surprised if he’s trying to be a stupid double agent. i wouldnt be surprised by anything shallow or weird or erratic or mean. And i definitely wont be surprised if he’s gay.And at this point i also definitely dont care.

How can one turn on a dime about something as simple as equality?

He didn’t turn on a dime; he mentioned his growing awareness of the anti-NOM crowd as real people with normal lives, rather than weirdos who want special rights. And from that, and conversations with some of those people, he started to see the problems with some of NOM’s exaggerations and outright lies, and some of the harm being done by anti-gay activism that’s pretending to be about “protecting marriage.”

He mentions several stages of his change of awareness; coming forward in support of equal marriage rights is just the final step. It didn’t come out of nowhere as an epiphany; he gradually started seeing the hate and bigotry that NOM is pushing. He still thinks homosexuality is wrong; he’s just willing to agree that being “wrong” doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be allowed to marry. He still thinks some pretty screwed-up things about homosexuality, but I’ve got hopes that he’ll be open to learning the facts behind those myths as well.
