I don’t usually post Courage Campaign emails in full, but I’m running out the door and wanted you all to see this, in case you’re interested in joining us on the call, with Rick Jacobs moderating.
The subject of this new book by Markos Moulitsas dovetails directly with the mission of this web site — to cover the Prop 8 trial as it develops and hold the right-wing accountable across the spectrum of the LGBT rights movement.
If you can join us on Thursday night, we’d love to have you:
With the religious right continuing to use marriage equality as a wedge issue as the November election looms, we thought it would be a good time for a “Courage Campaign Conversation” with Markos Moulitsas, founder of Daily Kos, one of America’s largest online political communities.
Markos has a written a new book called “American Taliban: How War, Sex, Sin, and Power Bind Jihadists and the Radical Right” and we’ve invited him to talk about it with you on a nationwide conference call this Thursday, Sept. 16, at 5:30 p.m. PST / 8:30 p.m. EST. Please read his message below and then RSVP for the call ASAP: http://www.couragecampaign.org/MarkosCall Rick Jacobs |
Dear Friend–
Right-wingers say a lot of ridiculous things. But few were more ridiculous than the repeated claims that progressives were in league with Islamic terrorists.
Why would progressives make common cause with terrorists? After all, the values and tactics that make Jihadists so despicable are the same values and tactics embraced by our own homegrown fundamentalists — the American Taliban.
That’s why I wrote the book “American Taliban: How War, Sex, Sin, and Power Bind Jihadists and the Radical Right.” In the book, I show how the modern conservative movement has taken on the same attitudes and tactics of the Taliban, from their fetishization of violence and guns to their elevation of brute masculinity, love of theocracy, hatred of women and gays, fear of scientific progress and education, and disdain for popular culture.
Think about it. Both movements are dedicated to the unbridled pursuit of power at all costs, have little tolerance for the trappings of democracy, and quickly resort to violence when challenged… hardly the principles for which America stands.

When I typed my first words on Daily Kos in 2002, Democrats were cowering to the bullying of the Bush Administration, instead of standing strong against the opposition. We’ve made some progress since then. But we’ve still got a lot of work to do.
That’s why I wrote “American Taliban” — to establish what we’re up against and what it will take to fight it this November and in the coming years. I’ve got to say, I think this is my best book yet.

This should be a very open discussion. If you know any friends who would like to join us, please forward this message to them.
Thank you for all you do to make this a better country.

YES! Your third paragraph here says everything I have been thinking about in terms of commonalities between the social conservative values of divergent cultures.
How can that statement be refuted? It can’t! It completely sums up the “general” conservative platform, which completely runs parallel with the driving forces behind the extreme limitations on freedom found in the middle east – and other oppressive structures throughout history (which laughably get compared to “liberal” policies).
Liberalism is NOT oppressive!
How did that word get so turned around?
When can we claim it back in the name of the true American values???
Oh, God..did I just say that? It sounded so……Beck-ish. Sorry.
I will look for this book, though!

As a life-long liberal with a very open mind, I’ve come to see value in certain precepts of conservatism; i.e. spending money wisely and limiting government intrusion into our private lives are good ideas.
However, the Republican Party, and many “conservatives” are largely fascists in conservatives’ clothing. Markos Moulitsas’ comparison with the Taliban is spot-on.
And the word “liberal” has taken on such a negative connotation because not enough liberals had enough backbone to stand up to the fascists’ lies about us, much like the Democrats of 2001-2 failing to defend their own patriotism. All we have to do is have a liberal movement wherein we show our true colors–and some fortitude.

Bertrand Russell pointed out in writings from early/mid 1900’s that all throughout history, never are intellectual and moral advances so hindered as when religion is involved. (Christian, Islam or other) And never has humanity advanced as much as when religion is squashed in favor of civil law and science.

I’m buying this book off Amazon for less than $10. Looking forward to reading it! I agree completely that this is what is happening in America.

Speaking of the AmeriKan Taliban, we’re paying these free loading, power hungry, xtianist bigots with our tax dollars.

This is part of the reason why they feel entitled to tell the LGBTQIAs how to live their lives, because the federal government had literally given them a license to be assholes.

I was very disappointed that Pres. Obama did not close this Dubya legacy office down immediately.

Growing up in the fundamentalist Christian world, I have known for a long time the similarities between Fundies and the Taliban. The Fundies would love to have a country where women are kept in their place, modest clothing is proscribed, adulterers and gays are stoned, alcohol and rock music is prohibited, and everyone is forced to comply with their religion, and other religions are banned. Sounds a lot like the Taliban and present day Saudi Arabia and Iran. (ok, these countries aren’t quite as strict as the Taliban)

Ann — Do you know what time on the 17th the DIs must honor with their standing “case?” Do they have until 5:00 pm on that day? I’m ready for some more laughable reading.
28. Ann S. | September 16, 2010 at 9:30 am
Sorry, I don’t know the exact time, but I imagine they’ll file before 5:00 pm.
29. Tim in Sonoma | September 16, 2010 at 1:02 pm
I’m sorry Kate,
What is happening on the 17th?
30. Kate | September 16, 2010 at 1:31 pm
Tim, that’s the filing date for the argument the Prop 8 proponents have to give the 9th Circuit Court re why they should have standing to appeal.
31. Kate | September 16, 2010 at 1:32 pm
PS — they clearly don’t think they stand a chance, or they would not have been so busy trying to get Arnold or Jerry Brown forced to do it by the court. They even tried to get the Acting Gov to file an appeal in Arnold’s absence.
